Family Program

A separate, concurrent program will be held for parents and other family members.  Even if your reservation form indicated that parents or family would not attend, we encourage their participation and invite them to join us for an informative and enjoyable day. One of the strongest indicators of a student’s success in college is the degree to which family members are involved and supportive.  The family program will include:

  • Begin your day checking in with your student between 8:15 a.m. and 8:40 a.m.
  • Meet a representative of your student’s major college of study and learn about academic requirements and career opportunities.
  • Find out from NIU faculty and staff what it takes for new students to be successful and how Northern’s support services can help.
  • Take a student-led walking tour of the NIU central campus and visit a residence hall.
  • Attend a seminar for an in-depth look at topics such as the financial aid process, the honors program, cultural diversity, technology resources, and residence life at NIU.
  • Browse through the “Northern Neighborhood” and interact with representatives from more than 20 Student Affairs and Academic Support service units.
  • Get to know your student leader who will tell you about Northern from his/her perspective.
  • Meet other parents and family members and share your questions, experiences, and ideas in a small-group session led by your orientation leader.

Although representatives from campus offices such as housing and financial aid will be available for a brief time during family orientation, we recommend that students and parents who have specific questions about these areas call or visit the appropriate departments for assistance before Orientation.

Note: The family program is not designed to accommodate children pre-school age and younger.
