Family Program
The April orientation program offers a family program, which provides an overview of life at Northern Illinois University. It is designed to help you and your student make a smooth transition to the Northern community.
The family program runs concurrently with the student program and we encourage the family to participate. Last year, more than 6,000 family members participated and enjoyed an informative and rewarding experience.
During the family program you will:
-
Begin your day with check in at 8:30 a.m. in the Holmes Student Center.
-
Be welcomed by NIU President John Peters or his representative.
-
Meet a representative of your student’s major college of study and learn about academic requirements and career opportunities.
-
Meet staff who can answer your questions about billing, payments, and financial aid.
-
Learn from NIU staff what it takes for new students to be successful and how Northern’s support services can help.
-
Take a student-led walking tour of the NIU central campus.
-
Meet student leaders who will tell you about Northern from their perspective.
