Late Orientation

If you plan to attend an orientation program on January 10 or 11, contact the Office of Admissions or make an online payment and reservation from this Web site (reservation from Web site can only be made if you make an online payment). The non-refundable new student fee of $75.00 for this program partially covers the cost of materials, staffing, facilities, and administration of the program as well as other services for new NIU students. These programs are abbreviated versions of the more comprehensive sessions offered earlier.

To schedule your orientation date through Admissions, e-mail: admissions@niu.edu. Please put "Orientation" in the subject heading. Within the body of the message include your name, Z-ID number, and the date (January 10 or January 11) that you wish to attend. If you do not have access to e-mail, contact the Admissions Office by telephone at 815-753-0446 or 800-892-3050. The non-refundable new student fee of $75 (cash, check, or money order payment to Northern Illinois University ) will be payable the date you attend, prior to admission to the program.

To schedule your orientation date through this Web site, follow online payment and reservation instructions.

On the day of Orientation, you will begin by obtaining instructions and copies of your academic records at the Admissions Office in Williston Hall. The office will open at 7:30 a.m. You will need to begin this process on campus no earlier than 7:30 a.m. and no later than 9:00 a.m. Allow adequate time to reach the NIU campus and find parking facilities, which is especially important if the weather is inclement.

  • Your orientation program will consist of:
  • an explanation of Northern's degree requirements and an overview of student services
  • instructions for using Northern's TRACS registration system
  • an opportunity to complete placement and/or proficiency testing
  • a meeting with your undergraduate college (for some colleges)
  • academic advising
  • an opportunity to obtain your NIU OneCard (photo ID). To obtain a University OneCard on your orientation day, please bring a current government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state issued ID, military ID, or passport).

It is best to plan on a full day for your orientation session although the process will be quicker for some students. There is no family orientation program offered on these dates due to space and staffing limitations.

Parking facilities are available in the Visitor Parking Lot (see map on reverse side) at a cost of $5 per day. We recommend that you arrive early to allow ample time to reach the orientation site.

If you have questions regarding the orientation programs on January 10 and 11, feel free to contact the Orientation & FYE Office by e-mail (orientation@niu.edu) or phone (815-753-1535). Keep in mind that the University will be closed between December 22 and January 2.
